ANZ’s engineering brain bank on show at UNCONFERENCE
In 2014, ANZ held its first Unconference. The goal was to share knowledge and help peer-to-peer learning among software engineers. Nine years later, this goal still endures.
“We use Unconference as a safe place for our engineers to share with colleagues the innovative projects they’ve worked on and the knowledge they’ve gained over the past year – from both within the bank and beyond” says 2023 organiser Amit Bhandari, Engineering and Platforms Portfolio Lead.
“This year we’ve aligned the five days of Unconference 2023, UC23, with the bank’s key strategic themes and what’s happening in the engineering field more broadly.
“We’re also getting extra technical. The first four days will still have ample opportunities for engineers to give back to their peers and make personal connections, but from a learning perspective, we’re really getting into the detail.”
Each Unconference day has its own theme and is curated by a team of senior ANZ leaders. This year’s day themes are:
· Day 1: AI as an engineering partner
· Day 2: simplified engineering (bringing architecture and simplification together)
· Day 3: cloud
· Day 4: data and analytics
The final day of UC23, Friday 24 November, is about ANZ and our key partners sharing their knowledge and recent experiences with the broader engineering community. Dubbed ‘DevOps Open Day,’ it’s an in-person event at ANZ Centre in Melbourne and is open to the public.

The open day will have speakers from AWS, Google, Microsoft, GitHub, RedHat and IBM. There will also be a vibrant vendor marketplace running, an AWS Deep Racer competition, and plenty of swag for attendees. Click the link below to register your interest in attending. Spots are limited!
Here’s what some of the DevOps Open Day speakers will be talking about:
GitHub like a boss – having just finished their global developer conference, Universe, we’ll be one of the first to hear in person about all the new capabilities GitHub are releasing.
Google panel – hearing from engineers who manage some of Google’s billion-user platforms such as maps and photos will be invaluable, as many of us face the same challenges they have overcome. Learn about how they tackle problems, their modus operandi, and their thinking.
IBM Quantum Computing - Quantum computing is a leading area of technology but a black hole for many people. This session will go from the basics to demonstrate how engineers can use Quantum today.
We want all attendees to leave Unconference with practical knowledge they can apply to solve their own problems. And we take great pride in seeing new friendships develop from people discussing their thoughts and ideas with like-minded people.
